Response to the Board of Education rescinding the renaming resolution

We did it!

The board voted tonight to rescind their approval of the list of schools to be renamed that resulted from a deeply flawed process during a time of crisis for public school students and families. While it is deeply disappointing that the Board failed to prioritize the safe reopening of our shuttered schools for the better part of a year, we are relieved that they have now chosen to do so in the wake of several lawsuits and sustained public pressure.

We are here today because of your support and advocacy. We fully expect the Board of Education to take on this issue again in the fall. Our public education institutions should reflect our values, and that includes their names. But we must ensure processes that rename schools are done correctly, and that we prioritize direct actions for students.

Families for San Francisco will take the lead in fighting for a process that truly is student and community-centered, after all schools are fully open to all students. If you haven’t read our report on renaming yet, you can read it here. And if you want to hear more from us, please join our mailing list below. ⬇
