Matt Haney for State Assembly

Families for San Francisco is proud to announce we are endorsing Matt Haney for California’s State Assembly District 17.

We believe Matt Haney’s values are aligned with our mission to promote good governance, first-rate education and an excellent and affordable quality of life in San Francisco. He has stated that he will push for legislation that produces more housing at all income levels, improves public transportation and expands mental health and substance use treatment.

Public education is one of the core issues for Families for San Francisco. We have been deeply involved in the grassroots parents movement to revitalize and improve San Francisco’s public schools. We believe Matt Haney’s prior experience as a school board member has helped him understand what is driving public engagement, and we are confident he will lend his support in the next chapter of this story.

One area of particular importance to us is the current SFUSD math curriculum. The report we published last October called for an investigation of SFUSD’s flawed and misleading claims from the changes to the math curriculum it made in 2014. We believe Matt Haney understands the need to insist on a full, peer-reviewable assessment of SFUSD’s data and methods before Sacramento uses any of SFUSD’s claims as the basis for any changes to the state math curriculum.

We are encouraged by Matt Haney’s commitment to problem solve issues that are core to our mission and believe he is the right choice for State Assembly.
