Our Response to SFUSD Pausing the Renaming of Schools

Families for San Francisco is relieved that the Board of Education decided to postpone school renaming to focus on school reopening. Getting our children safely back to their classrooms must be the Board's only priority today. Our report on SFUSD school renaming described in detail the deeply flawed process behind the renaming effort. We thank President Lopez for acknowledging that mistakes were made, that now is not the time to focus on renaming, and that historians and the community should be involved in renaming decisions.

The Board now must repeal the January 26th renaming resolution. Once all SFUSD students are back in their classrooms full time, we urge the Board to uphold its commitment to facilitate a deliberate renaming process that centers on students, is grounded in facts, and involves the full community. Families for San Francisco is committed to holding our elected officials to account and to fighting for the community's voices to be heard. We offer any assistance we can on the issue of reopening and, when schools are reopened, renaming.
